Dietary sources of anthocyanins include elderberries, chokeberries, bilberries, raspberries, blackcurrants, blackberries, blueberries, purple potatoes. Available as supplements, procured as anthocyanin-rich fruit extracts.

Extract from an article published on The Angiogenesis Foundation website:
Fifteen patients with histologically confirmed colorectal adenocarcinomas and 10 patients with confirmed colorectal liver metastases were enrolled in this British study. The patients that were scheduled to undergo surgical removal of a primary colon tumor or liver metastases were given oral mirtocyan at 3 different doses — 1.4, 2.8, or 5.6 grams (containing 0.5-2.0 grams anthocyanins) — on a daily basis for 7 days before surgery.

Tumor proliferation from colorectal tumor samples taken from all patients who received mirtocyan was significantly decreased by 7% compared with pre-intervention values…There was also a small reduction in circulating IGF-I [stimulates tumor blood supply] concentrations across all patients/doses and a small increase in apoptosis [cell death] in colorectal tumor samples…It is possible that higher concentrations of anthocyanin would lead to even more pronounced anti-tumor effects.


This study says:
Anthocyanins have been shown to exhibit anti-carcinogenic activity against multiple cancer cell types. Potential cancer chemopreventive activities of anthocyanins include reduced cell proliferation, inflammation, angiogenesis and invasiveness, and induction of apoptosis and differentiation.

This study found that cyanidin [an anthocyanin] inhibits the proliferation and migration of Renal Cell Carcinoma cells in a concentration-independent manner and may have therapeutic potential to curtail the carcinogenic process and attenuate the chemosensitivity of Renal Cell Carcinoma.

This study says: In the present study, a commercially available extract from bilberries and blackcurrants, rich in anthocyanins, is shown to inhibit the growth of colon cancer cells…the results of the present study suggest a possible chemotherapeutic role of berry anthocyanins extract in treatment of colon cancer…In conclusion, the present study suggests exposure to an anthocyanins extract may promote apoptosis in colon cancer cells… and may inhibit the proliferation of cancer cells.
