Supplement Buying Guide for cancer patients

Choosing a supplement is not just about finding the right ingredient — it is also about choosing a product that is accurately labelled, properly tested, and made to a reliable standard. This matters even more for people affected by cancer, where supplements may be used to support nutrition, reduce side effects, improve resilience, or complement a wider recovery plan. A poor-quality supplement can contain less of the active ingredient than stated, include unwanted contaminants, or use forms that are poorly absorbed or inappropriate for the intended purpose.

This guide is designed to help you buy supplements more carefully and confidently. The aim is not to promote supplements indiscriminately, but to help you make more informed choices when a supplement appears useful, evidence-supported, and appropriate for your situation.

Independently verified products – ideally listed in a public certification directory* reduce uncertainty and help ensure you’re taking exactly what’s on the label.

*Public third-party certification directories include:

IFOS (International Fish Oil Standards)
Best for Omega-3 fish oils

USP (U.S. Pharmacopeia)
USP Verified means that the contents in the bottle match exactly what’s on the label. USP verifies dietary supplements containing vitamins, minerals, and other dietary supplements.

NSF
NSF laboratories conduct testing to confirm that what’s on the label is what you get, and that no potentially harmful levels of impurities are present. NSF periodically retests each supplement to ensure continued compliance.
