Homocysteine Lowering Supplements
Homocysteine (HCY)
An amino acid that is produced by the human body, usually as a byproduct of consuming meat. Homocysteine is normally converted into other amino acids.
High Homocysteine levels associated with poorer outcomes.
This 2024 retrospective study involved 1272 CRC patients. The risk of mortality increased with increasing Homocysteine levels in colorectal cancer patients. The Recurrence Free Survival of patients with high Homocysteine levels were significantly lower than those of patients with low Homocysteine levels. Elevated serum Homocysteine levels were strongly associated with poor Recurrence Free Survival and Overall Survival in colorectal cancer patients.
Vitamin B12 and folate levels are decreased in cancer patients.
This study confirms the finding of higher homocysteine levels in cancer patients when compared to controls. Vitamin B12 and folate levels are significantly decreased in cancer patients.
Lowering Homocysteine levels.
This 2021 article Hyperhomocysteinemia and Cancer: The Role of Natural Products and Nutritional Interventions says:
Various clinical trials have shown that the oral supplementation of folic acid, B6, and B12 vitamins significantly lowers circulating homocysteine levels…
Surgery and chemo increase Homocysteine levels.
This study says:
In this present study, we observed a significant increase in homocysteine concentration 6 months after chemotherapy, as well as a significant decrease in vitamin B12, folic acid, and platelets at the third and sixth month after beginning of chemotherapy treatment in women with BC [breast cancer].
This study says:
Treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy, and venous catheterization increase the risk of hyperhomocysteinemia development. Patients undergoing surgery have at least twice the risk of deep vein thrombosis and three times the risk of fatal venous embolism than patients without cancer undergoing similar procedures.
