“I tell my patients that I think of cancer as a weed. Modern western oncology is focused on destroying the weed while integrative oncology concentrates on the soil the weed grows in and on making the soil as inhospitable as possible to the growth and spread of the weed.”
Donald I. Abrams, M.D., the former director of Clinical Programs at the University of California, San Francisco Osher Center for Integrative Medicine
A Comprehensive Definition for Integrative Oncology

“Integrative oncology is a patient-centered, evidence-informed field of cancer care that utilizes mind and body practices, natural products, and/or lifestyle modifications from different traditions alongside conventional cancer treatments. Integrative oncology aims to optimize health, quality of life, and clinical outcomes across the cancer care continuum and to empower people to prevent cancer and become active participants before, during, and beyond cancer treatment.”
Growth of Integrative Medicine in Cancer Care
Source: American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).
In 1999, the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center established the first Integrative Medicine Service to provide evidence-based complementary therapies that improve patients’ quality of life by alleviating physical and emotional symptoms associated with cancer and its treatments. A number of other leading centers in cancer care, including The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, also formed integrative medicine programs. As evidence of the significant growth of this new field, in 2003, integrative oncology researchers and clinicians at major cancer centers in the United States established the Society for Integrative Oncology to advance evidence-based, comprehensive, integrative health care to improve the lives of people affected by cancer (www.integrativeonc.org).

It is necessary to combine conventional standard therapy methods of surgery, radiation and chemotherapy with treatment methods that eliminate the well known risk factors of cancer. This helps to optimize the control of the disease and strengthen the body’s own natural defense system. Therefore, at St. George Hospital we developed an Integrative Cancer Therapy Concept (ICTC) in which we combine the conventional treatment modalities with complementary therapies. This concept gives patients a realistic chance to overcome not only the symptoms but also restore health.

Cancer patients in all stages of their disease come to us. People arrive in our clinic to work with us to find the best treatment for their condition. We specialise in different hyperthermia treatments which we use in combination with conventional and other complementary treatments. Our principle aim is to make sure that the treatment of cancer should not harm the patient more than the disease does already.
Our clinic was founded in 1996 with the goal to give those with “untreatable conditions” an opportunity to recover. Over time, we acquired the reputation of specializing in “treatment failures”, ie, patients that had gone to other medical facilities but had failed all conventional treatments as well as “alternative” treatments. By utilizing any and all necessary conventional, traditional, as well as integrative and alternative medical treatments, we have been able to restore this essential balance and reestablish health and vitality in the vast majority of our patient population.
