Around 90% of cancer deaths are as a result of metastasis (cancer spreading to other organs).
Cancer stem cells are suspected to be the cause of most – if not all – metastases.

What are Cancer stem cells?
This type of stem cell represents a small proportion of the types of cell found in a tumour, and can replicate tumour cells, causing tumours to grow and spread. Cancer stem cells are considered resistant to drug and radiotherapy treatments, and therefore can be left behind after the course of cancer treatment comes to an end, allowing the tumour to regrow and spread around the body.

Physical Exercise

Exercise and improved survival
Consistent evidence from epidemiologic studies links physical activity after diagnosis with better breast cancer outcomes. For example, a large cohort study found that women who exercised moderately (the equivalent of walking 3 to 5 hours per week at an average pace) after a breast cancer diagnosis had approximately 40% to 50% lower risks of breast cancer recurrence, death from breast cancer, and death from any cause compared with more sedentary women. The potential physical activity benefit with regard to death from breast cancer was most apparent in women with hormone receptor–positive tumors.
Another prospective cohort study found that women who had breast cancer and who engaged in recreational physical activity roughly equivalent to walking at an average pace of 2 to 2.9 mph for 1 hour per week had a 35% to 49% lower risk of death from breast cancer compared with women who engaged in less physical activity.

Evidence from multiple epidemiologic studies suggests that physical activity after a colorectal cancer diagnosis is associated with reduced risks of dying from colorectal cancer. In a large prospective cohort of patients with colorectal cancer, those who engaged in leisure-time physical activity had a 31% lower risk of death than those who did not, independent of their leisure-time physical activity before diagnosis.

Several large cohort studies in colorectal cancer survivors document…survival advantages and reduced recurrence risk in patients who engaged in physical activity after diagnosis, with improvements of up to 50%.

Exercise and Improved Survival in Prostate cancer patients

Limited evidence from a few epidemiologic studies has suggested a possible link between physical activity and better outcomes among men diagnosed with prostate cancer. In one study, men with nonmetastatic prostate cancer who engaged in vigorous activity for at least 3 hours per week had a 61% lower risk of death from prostate cancer compared with men who engaged in vigorous activity for less than 1 hour per week. Another study of men with localized prostate cancer found that higher levels of physical activity were associated with reduced overall and prostate cancer–specific mortality.

Vitamin D

Sunshine spurs the body to make vitamin D.
Food sources: Fish such as salmon, tuna, and mackerel. Small amounts of vitamin D are found in beef liver, cheese, and egg yolks.

This study says Vitamin D and its analogs have inhibitory effects on cancer stem cell signaling in various types of human cancer cells and may be promising therapeutic/preventive agents against Cancer Stem Cells.

This study concluded: Vitamin D plays a pivotal role in Gastrointestinal Tract malignancies. Vitamin D affects several cellular mechanisms such as inhibiting differentiation, proliferation, metastasis and invasion, angiogenesis, inducing cell cycle arrest, and apoptosis, thus supporting its anticancer role.

This study says: Several lines of evidence have demonstrated that vitamin D plays an important role in the regulation of stem cells of the prostate and the skin. Moreover, vitamin D is a well known inducer of the terminal differentiation of human myeloid leukemia cells… Recently, vitamin D and its analogs were shown to reduce the number of CSCs in breast cancer, further supporting their potential as therapeutic agents.

* There are several studies which show that over 90 per cent of people with melanoma are deficient in vitamin D. Not surprisingly they have weaker immune systems too. The fact is they haven´t had ENOUGH sun!

Raw (uncooked) broccoli:
In this study of 239 bladder cancer patients…intake of raw cruciferous vegetables was significantly associated with reduced disease-specific (57% reduction) and overall mortality (43% reduction), a result largely driven by raw broccoli intake. The reduction was observed with consumption of at least one serving raw broccoli per month (average intake 3.9 servings/month), indicating the feasibility of this type of diet intervention strategy. Our findings are consistent with experimental evidence demonstrating that isothiocyanate exposure, as measured by urinary metabolite concentrations, is three to four fold higher in individuals after consumption of raw compared with cooked broccoli.

Lycopene (phytochemical)

In this review, the authors highlight the remarkable ability of phytochemicals to decrease the replicative capacity of Cancer Stem Cells…These phytochemicals have been thoroughly studied for at least three decades…these studies provide a huge body of knowledge, which can now be applied in the development of treatments against CSCs.

This study says Lycopene has been shown to induce apoptosis and inhibit cell cycle progression in various cancer cells.

A combination of vitamin E, selenium, and lycopene has been shown to dramatically inhibit prostate cancer development and to increase disease-free survival. Lycopene has also been shown to suppress the growth of lung cancer cells, according to this study

This article says an epidemiological study in elderly Americans indicated that high tomato intake was associated with a 50% reduction in mortality from cancers at all sites.

The treatment of colon cancer cells with piperine has been shown to reduce the ability of the cells to form non-adherent spheres and colonies, suggesting the inhibiting effect of piperine on cancer stem cells, says this study

Indole-3-Carbinol (I3C)

The authors of this research paper say previous studies have shown that I3C inhibits prostate cancer cell growth and prevent or delay the progression of cancer, through its ability to attack cancer stem cells

Falcarinol and falcarindiol

Polyacetylenes derived from carrot and parsley
The authors of this study say they provide several pieces of evidence suggesting that falcarindiol has the anticancer role by targeting glioblastoma cells, as well as glioblastoma stem-like cells. Falcarindiol was shown to selectively kill colorectal cancer cells and repress tumor growth, without affecting normal colon epithelial cells. The anticancer function of falcarindiol was further demonstrated with breast cancer cells in which falcarindiol contributed to autophagy-dependent tumor cell death.

This study says falcarindiol inhibits development of breast and other cancers.

Ursolic acid

Findings suggested that UA is involved in mechanism to affect the proliferation and apoptosis of human ovarian cancer stem-like cells and it is a potent anti-ovarian cancer agent, according to this study


Baked purple-fleshed potato suppressed proliferation and induced apoptosis in colon cancer stem cells, says this study. The study authors say their results provide the evidence that Purple Potato extract has the potential to target the self-renewal of colon cancer stem cells.

Anthocyanins are natural plant pigments that have beneficial effects for the plant as well as for humans and animals. Dietary sources of anthocyanins are generally easy to identify due to their red, blue, or purple color. Examples include berries and red-skinned grapes, apples, and pears and various vegetables such as radishes and red/purple cabbage. This Review found:
In vitro [in the laboratory ], we saw that anthocyanins affect: the proliferation of the cancer cells, inhibiting of the ability of cancer cells to divide uncontrollably, the induction of apoptosis, the process of angiogenesis where tumors form new blood vessels, and the cancer cells invasion through healthy tissue. Also, a few of the in vivo [in the body] studies demonstrate that dietary anthocyanins inhibit the growth of different types of tumors, angiogenesis, and show apoptotic effect against the cancer cells.


Suppresses the generation of breast cancer stem cells according to this study, while this study says it inhibits the proliferation of melanoma cells.

These results indicate that the flavonoids, particularly apigenin and quercetin, can reduce theself-renewal capacity of Glioblastoma stem-like cells. These findings underscore the therapeutic potential of the flavonoids to suppress Glioblastoma metastasis by regulating the migration and invasion of Glioblastoma Stem Cells, according to this study

Green Tea (EGCG)green tea

AHCC (a natural immune-modulating compound)

A study was performed from February 1, 1992 to December 31, 2001. A total of 269 patients with histologically confirmed hepatocellular carcinoma were studied. All of the patients underwent resection of a liver tumor. Time to treatment failure (disease recurrence or death) and ten parameters related to liver function after surgery were examined.

Of the 269 patients, 113 received AHCC orally after undergoing curative surgery (AHCC group). The AHCC group had a significantly longer no recurrence period …and an increased overall survival rate when compared to the control group… This study suggests that AHCC intake can improve the prognosis of postoperative HCC patients.

This study: This study suggests that AHCC intake could prolong the survival and improve the prognosis of patients with advanced liver cancer and delay the gradual decline of their physiological status.


Beta Glutans

What are Beta Glutans?
A substance found in bacteria, plants, and certain foods, such as baker’s yeast, cereal grains, and mushrooms. It is a type of polysaccharide that is made of a string of glucose (sugar) molecules joined together. Beta-glucan may stimulate the immune system and help kill cancer cells. It is being studied in the treatment of cancer.

The results of this study suggest that Naringenin, one of the most abundant flavonoids in citrus fruits, has a potentially useful inhibitory effect on tumor growth.

This study says that naringenin inhibits bladder cancer cell migration and, thus, may have the potential to suppress bladder cancer metastasis.

Polysaccharide-K (PSK)

Polysaccharide-K (PSK) or krestin, from the mushroom T. versicolor, is an approved mushroom product used for cancer treatment in Japan. PSK is a proprietary formulation from the Kureha Corporation. PSK has been used as an adjunctive cancer treatment in thousands of patients since the mid-1970s. The safety record for PSK is well established in Japan.

Fifteen of 17 preclinical studies supported anticancer effects for PSK through immunomodulation and potentiation of immune surveillance, as well as through direct tumor inhibiting actions in vivo that resulted in reduced tumor growth and anti-metastatic effects. Nonrandomized controlled trials showed improvement of various survival measures including median survival and 1-, 2-, and 5-year survival. Randomized controlled trials showed benefits on a range of endpoints, including immune parameters and hematological function, performance status and body weight, tumor-related symptoms such as fatigue and anorexia, as well as survival.

For centuries, researchers have been searching for strategies to control cancer progression through different approaches. Honokiol is a potential natural compound that exerts multiple effects on different cellular processes in various cancer models. Bee Propolis (containing Caffeic Acid Phenethyl Ester (CAPE))

The authors of this study showed that CAPE inhibits the growth of breast cancer stem cells and potentially makes them more susceptible to chemotherapeutic agents when used in combination.

The authors of this study say their results strongly suggest that CAPE could be a powerful inhibitor of cancer stem cell growth and functions that are responsible for CSC-mediated recurrence of breast cancer and increased patient mortality.

This scientific review says that recent studies indicate that CAPE (caffeic acid phenethyl ester ) treatment can effectively suppress the proliferation, survival, and metastasis of oral cancer cells… CAPE treatment will be useful for treatment of advanced oral cancer patients.

Ashwagandha (Withaferin A)

The herbal supplement Withaferin A significantly inhibited the tumorigenic potential of isolated cancer stem cells in vitro and significantly reduced its expression in tumors collected from mice, according to this Study

This study says Withaferin A induces cell death (apoptosis/necrosis) in multiple types of tumor cells.

Silibinin (Milk Thistle seed extract)

Recent preclinical studies have shown strong efficacy of silibinin to target cancer cell’s migratory and invasive characteristics as well as their ability to metastasize to distant organs, according to this study

The authors of this study say their data provide sufficient evidence that silibinin has dual efficacy against both bulk colorectal cancer cells cells and colon cancer stem cells.


Berberine is an alkaloid isolated from the roots and bark of Berberis plants and is available as a supplement.
This study showed the anti-cancer stem cell effect of berberine on oral cancer.

Feverfew and Green chirayta (Andrographis Paniculata)

This review says “the compound parthenolide, which is derived from the medicinal plant feverfew, has recently been shown to preferentially induce acute myelogenous leukaemia (AML) stem cells to undergo apoptosis. Importantly, parthenolide had no discernable effect on normal blood cells.”

This study shows that feverfew plant extract and Green chirayta plant extract are highly effective anti-myeloma cancer stem cell agents, with Green chirayta plant extract displaying increased selectivity for myeloma cancer stem cells compared to feverfew plant extract. The data presented here constitute the first report of natural products with anti-Cancer Stem Cell activity in myeloma cancer

Broccoli Sprout Extract

A cruciferous vegetable extract with potential chemopreventive activities. Broccoli sprout extract contains a high amount of sulforaphane, a naturally occurring isothiocyanate. Source: National cancer Institute.

In this study of 239   patients … intake of raw cruciferous vegetables was significantly associated with reduced disease-specific (57% reduction) and overall mortality (43% reduction), a result largely driven by raw broccoli intake. The reduction was observed with consumption of at least one serving raw broccoli per month (average intake 3.9 servings/month), indicating the feasibility of this type of diet intervention strategy.

This 2019 study found:
Fifteen capsules with pulverized broccoli sprouts … were administered daily for up to 1 year. Twenty-nine patients were included in the treatment group and 11 patients were in the placebo group; these patients were followed for up to 1 year… Compared to those of the placebo group, the mean death rate was lower in the treatment group during the first 6 months after intake…and Kaplan-Meier analysis revealed a higher survival rate.

This study concluded:  the present study showed that sulforaphane inhibited cancer stemness through miR-200c induction, which resulted in the inhibition of the self-renewal, metastasis, and tumor initiation properties of OSCC-CSCs [Oral Squamous Cell Carcinomas – Cancer Stem Cells].

According to, Broccoli sprouts, germinated seeds of broccoli that have a radishy taste and look similar to alfalfa sprouts, may improve survival rates of bladder cancer patients, help protect skin cells from sun damage, and potentially boost liver detoxification. They also have among the highest concentrations of sulforaphane, a dietary component of cruciferous vegetables that has been shown to benefit autism and suppress the ability of breast cancer stem cells to form tumors.

Tian Xian

Tian Xian is an extract of 14 Chinese medicinal herbs (ingredients may vary depending on manufacturers) and is used for cancer treatment in traditional medicine. According to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, in vitro studies demonstrated that Tian Xian has immunomodulating and anticancer effects. also known as Tien-Hsien Liquid (THL).

Findings of this study  suggest that an oral administration  Tien-Hsien Liquid three times a day for 24 weeks significantly improves quality of life, increases physical, emotional, and cognitive functioning, decreases fatigue and systemic therapy side effects, and has immunomodulating effects on lymphocytes in patients with refractory metastatic breast cancer. Additionally, THL-P treatment did not induce any severe adverse events.

Study: In this study, we demonstrated that the Chinese herbal cocktail THL could inhibit cancer metastasis and angiogenesis by targeting multiple biological and pathological processes in cancer cells. We also demonstrated that THL, which was delivered one week after tumor implantation, could exert anti-tumor effects but had no adverse effect on body weight in immuno-compromised mice, implicating that THL has potential to be used as a therapeutic agent for established tumors. Moreover, our preliminary results also indicated that oral delivery of THL could inhibit tumor growth and induce anti-tumor immunity in immuno-competent mice…Together these data suggest that THL is a promising cancer therapeutic agent and merits further investigation.

Study: THL can enhance the antitumor immune responses in mice vaccinated with killed tumor cells. These results suggest that THL may be used as a complementary medicine for cancer patients previously treated with killed tumor cell vaccines, radiotherapy, or chemotherapy.

Metformin, a drug used with Type-2 diabetes to lower serum glucose levels has been shown to be extremely helpful in cancer treatment. A meta-analysis of 20 research papers by Dr. Ming Yin et al in The Oncologist stated the metformin helped ‘increase survival times of patients’. Diabetics who take metformin are much less likely to develop cancer than those who don’t.

In human cancer cells of different origin, metformin has been shown to induce cell cycle arrest, growth inhibition and apoptosis…As demonstrated in a number of recent studies,
metformin is able to selectively target Cancer Stem Cells in different types of human cancers, including breast , pancreatic and thyroid cancer. This 2016 Review published in Annals of Oncology looked at data from observational studies comprising 24,178 participants. In those with early-stage colorectal cancer, metformin use was associated with a significant benefit in all outcomes.

This meta-analysis provides evidence that beta blocker use can be associated with the prolonged survival of cancer patients, especially patients with early-stage cancer treated primarily with surgery.

Non-small-cell lung cancer
This study which retrospectively reviewed 722 patients with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who received definitive radiotherapy (RT) concluded:

…this analysis demonstrated that the incidental use of beta-blockers in this group of patients with NSCLC was associated with improved DMFS [distant metastasis-free survival ], DFS [disease-free survival], and OS [overall survival] – but not with LRPFS [locoregional progression-free survival ] – after definitive treatment that included RT. These findings are concordant with those of previous preclinical studies, suggesting that beta-blockers have specific effects on the metastatic cascade.

Researchers have discovered antihistamines used to treat allergy have unique anti-cancer properties that are just now being recognized. It has been shown that the drug stops cancer cells being ´sticky´ and clumping together or sticking to organs and this could prevent new tumours forming and new metastatic spread. It is particularly useful shortly before, during and after surgery to stop any threat of spread. In 2002 Clinical Trials of people having Colorectal surgery, 47 per cent did not survive 3 years. But with those taking Cimetidine, this figure fell to just 5 per cent.

Swedish research showed that women with breast cancer who were coincidentally taking anti-histamines (such as Desloratidine or Loratidine) survived up to 50 per cent longer than those who weren´t.
There is some concern that Cimetidine has estrogenic properties. If you have breast cancer or prostate cancer, for example, this may be a concern.

Artemisinin (Anti-Malaria drug)

This study was the first randomised, double blind study to test the anti-Colorectal Cancer properties of oral artesunate (a derivative of Artemisinin). This was a single centre, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Patients planned for curative surgery of biopsy confirmed single primary site Colorectal Cancer were randomised to receive either 14 daily doses of oral artesunate or placebo. During a median follow up of 42 months, there were 6 recurrences in the placebo group and 1 recurrence in an artesunate recipient.
The survival beyond 2 years in the artesunate group is estimated at 91% whilst surviving the first recurrence in the placebo group is only 57%.

Adverse Reactions
In this phase I study, 23 patients with metastatic breast cancer received either 100, 150, or 200 mg oral artesunate (ART) daily with guideline-based oncological therapy for 4 weeks to determine the tolerated dose. During the accrual period, 3 patients experienced six dose-limiting adverse events, including leukopenia, neutropenia, asthenia, and anemia, which were possibly related to ART.


According to a 2015 study Repurposing Drugs in Oncology (ReDO) – itraconazole as an anti-cancer agent :

Clinical trials have shown that patients with prostate, lung, and basal cell carcinoma have benefited from treatment with itraconazole, and there are additional reports of activity in leukaemia, ovarian, breast, and pancreatic cancers.

Additionally, based on the properties summarised previously, it is proposed that itraconazole may synergise with a range of other drugs to enhance the anti-cancer effect…

Non-small cell lung cancer
In patients with non-small cell lung cancer which is advanced or has spread, Tecentriq has been shown to be more effective than a comparator medicine at prolonging patients’ lives. In one main study of 850 patients, those patients given Tecentriq lived on average for 14 months while those given another cancer medicine, docetaxel, lived for an average of 10 months. Similar results were seen in a second lung cancer study of 287 patients where on average patients on Tecentriq lived for 13 months compared with 10 months for patients on docetaxel.

Adverse effects:
The most common side effects with Tecentriq when used on its own (which may affect more than 1 in 10 people) are tiredness, reduced appetite, nausea (feeling sick), vomiting, cough, difficulty breathing, diarrhoea, rash, fever, pain in the back, joints, muscles and bones, weakness, itching and urinary tract infection (infection of the structures that carry urine).    The most common side effects with Tecentriq when used with other cancer medicines (which may affect more than 2 in 10 people) are peripheral neuropathy (nerve damage in the hands and feet), nausea, anaemia (low red blood cell counts), neutropenia (low white blood cell counts), thrombocytopenia (low platelet counts), rash, tiredness, constipation, reduced appetite, diarrhoea, and cough.


Immunotherapy Drug Opdivo for Lung Cancer

Opdivo is a cancer medicine used on its own or with another cancer medicine, ipilimumab, to treat adults with advanced melanoma, a type of skin cancer that has spread to other parts of the body or cannot be surgically removed.

Opdivo is also used on its own to treat adults with:

a lung cancer called non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) that has spread locally or to other parts of the body in patients who have previously been treated with other cancer medicines (chemotherapy)

Opdivo in combination with ipilimumab is indicated for the first-line treatment of adult patients with intermediate/poor-risk advanced renal cell carcinoma

Supportive information was also provided from another study indicating that Opdivo could produce a response in patients with squamous NSCLC whose disease had progressed despite several previous treatments.

This study concluded: We could show that in unresectable advanced pancreatic cancer, NSC-631570 [ukrain] alone and in combination with gemcitabine nearly doubled the median survival times in patients suffering from advanced pancreatic cancer.

Niclosamide (tapeworm treatment)

A 2013 study published in PubMed concludes “data from randomised clinical studies have shown that aspirin prevents the development of malignancy, and it also appears to decrease the development and spread of metastases.

Chloroquine, a drug currently used to treat malaria, may be useful in treating patients with metastatic cancers according to a new study by University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center.


Bisphosphonates can reduce the risk of metastases to the bones in cancer patients.

This article in The Lancet talked about a meta-analysis of randomised trials of bisphosphonates involving 18,766 women over a 20 year period. In postmenopausal women, the addition of bisphosphonates resulted in highly significant reductions for bone recurrence (6·6% vs 8·8%) and for breast cancer mortality (14·7% vs 18·0%) at 10 years. This benefit was independent of the type of bisphosphonate, the schedule of bisphosphonate administration, the oestrogen receptor status of the primary tumour, the presence of axillary lymph node involvement, and the use of concomitant systemic chemotherapy. There was no reduction in the incidence of contralateral breast cancer or in the risk of metastasis to non‐osseous [consisting of or turned into bone] sites. This landmark report on breast cancer treatment should lead to widespread adoption of bisphosphonates as a standard of care for the adjuvant therapy of early-stage breast cancer in postmenopausal women.

Bisphosphonates are a class of drugs that are used to treat abnormally high blood calcium (hypercalcemia) and bone pain caused by some types of cancer. In breast cancer, bisphosphonates are used primarily to reduce bone loss (osteoporosis) and the risk of fracture among postmenopausal women with estrogen receptor-positive disease who receive aromatase inhibitors.


Meta-Analysis Finds Benefits of Adjuvant Bisphosphonates for Postmenopausal Breast Cancer

To better understand the potential role of adjuvant bisphosphonate treatment for women with early-stage breast cancer, the Early Breast Cancer Trialists’ Collaborative Group (EBCTCG) conducted a meta-analysis of individual patient data for 18,766 participants in 26 randomized trials. These trials compared adjuvant bisphosphonate use for 2 to 5 years with no bisphosphonate use…The study was funded by Cancer Research UK and the Medical Research Council.

…When the study authors looked at the findings according to the trial participants’ menopausal status, they found that treatment with adjuvant bisphosphonates had no effect on any of the outcomes for premenopausal women. However, among the 11,767 postmenopausal women included in the analysis, the use of bisphosphonates was associated with statistically significant reductions in distant recurrence, in bone recurrence, and in death from breast cancer.


This study concluded: The application of taurolidine tends to prevent the development of lung metastases. Furthermore, taurolidine seems to reduce established lung metastases in this in vivo model. Taurolidine may offer additional therapeutic options in patients with colon adenocarcinoma.

Dipyridamole (an anticoagulant)

The experimental evidence strongly suggests that anticoagulants or agents interfering with platelet aggregation can prevent metastases. Despite uncertainties about the exact nature of the interaction between anticoagulants and cancer cells, anticoagulants may inhibit the adherence (or trapping) of cancer cells to capillary walls, so that cancer cells remain in systemic circulation and thus are exposed for a prolonged period to a hostile environment with the potential to eliminate cancer cells, according to this study.


This study says: Propranolol was also shown to have an effect on metastasis to the brain – the other major site of interest in breast cancer. Choy et al assessed retrospective data that showed that for stage II breast cancer patients beta-blocker usage was associated with a significantly reduced risk of post-operative recurrence or distant metastasis…The recent studies outlined in this paper add to the weight of evidence to support the use of propranolol as an anti-metastatic agent in breast cancer… There remains a clear potential for propranolol to be useful in a range of other cancers, including angiosarcoma, melanoma, and retinal haemangioblastomas in von Hippel-Lindau disease.

This study concluded…we observed reduced cancer-specific mortality among prostate cancer patients taking beta-blockers. However, we did not observe any effect of beta-blocker use on all-cause mortality in this meta-analysis. Taken together with studies in other cancer types and in preclinical models, our findings indicate a beneficial effect of beta-blockers on survival in patients with prostate cancer. Therefore, beta-blockers may be considered a promising therapeutic approach for adjuvant therapy in prostate cancer.

Salinomycin (anti-biotic drug)

Salinomycin has been shown to inhibit oxidative phosphorylation in mitochondria that may contribute to the elimination of Cancer Stem Cells by salinomycin, says this study

This study says salinomycin reduces the proportion of Cancer Stem Cells by more than 100-fold relative to paclitaxel, a commonly used breast cancer chemotherapeutic drug…salinomycin preferentially targets the viability of CSCs within breast cancer cell populations.

Niclosamide (tapeworm treatment)

This study concluded:

Artemisinin is a chemical compound extracted from the wormwood plant, Artemisia annua L. Artemisinin is an effective anticancer compound that produces few side effects.

This study revealed experimental evidences suggesting that artemisinin compounds may be a therapeutic alternative in highly aggressive cancers with rapid dissemination, without developing drug resistance.

Cesium Chloride

This study reports on 50 patients treated with Cesium. An impressive 50% recovered from various cancers, i.e., cancer of unknown primary, breast, colon, prostate, pancrease, lung, liver, lymphoma, ewing sarcoma of the pelvis and adeno-cancer of the gallbladder. A consistent finding in these patients was the disappearance of pain within the initial 3 days of Cs-treatment.

This study warns:
Cesium chloride, which is used as alternative therapy by some cancer patients, has been determined to have significant adverse effects, especially cardiovascular effects.

Sodium Dichloroacetate

The sodium salt of dichloroacetic acid with potential anti-cancer activity. This agent may stimulate apoptosis [programmed cell death] in cancer cells.

This study says: Based on our clinical experience, combined with existing publications, off-label DCA therapy is an option for patients with limited available conventional treatments, once they understand and accept the risks and benefits of therapy. This case report shows that even in advanced stage disease, DCA has the potential to prolong life without impacting a patient’s quality of life, as compared to chemotherapy with its frequent debilitating side effects or compromise in physiological function.

Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda)

This study found that oral bicarbonate therapy significantly reduced the incidence of metastases in experimental models of breast and prostate cancer… Notably, bicarbonate did not affect the systemic pH or the growth rate of primary tumors but had significant effects on the formation of spontaneous metastases.

Hydrazine Sulphate

A substance that has been studied as a treatment for cancer and as a treatment for cachexia (body wasting) associated with advanced cancer.

This study says: There is good evidence that hydrazine sulfate inhibits gluconeogenesis. Therefore, it may play a role in reducing the severity of cachexia and in improving the quality of life of cancer patients.

This study says: On the basis of observations available, Sehydrin may be assessed as an alternative drug for the treatment and symptomatic therapy of patients with some advanced solid tumours and malignant lymphomas at a disease stage when the other methods of treatment can not be used. 

This study found: In a series of 84 various evaluable disseminated cancer patients treated with hydrazine sulfate as a result of a pharmaceutical-sponsored investigational new drug (IND) study, it was found that 59/84 or 70 % of the cases improved subjectively and 14/84 or 17 % improved objectively.

Bovine Cartilage

Brand names: Catrix-S, Catrix, Psoriacin®, Rumalon®

Bovine cartilage is derived from cartilage, usually the trachea, of cows. It is used to prevent and treat cancer and treat HIV/AIDS; it may be administered via oral and parenteral routes. In vitro studies suggest that bovine cartilage may have antitumor and immunoregulatory effects. Few published clinical trials demonstrate its efficacy.

Nausea and vomiting are commonly reported adverse events. Other reported effects include changes in taste perception, fatigue, dizziness, and dyspepsia. Inflammation and irritation at injection sites are common following parenteral administration.

This 2018 study says: It appears that BC [bovine cartilage] induces tumor cell death through apoptosis and this mechanism of action is the same across different cell lines and species. Additionally, BC appeared to be non-immunogenic.

This 2014 study  says:
The present study reports cases of advanced cancer patient taking an extract of Nerium oleander now in Phase 1 clinical trials in cancer patients…We present case reports of 9 metastatic cancer patients who received the extract on personal use exemptions. Cases included 4 colon cancer patients, 3 pancreatic cancer patients (1 neuroendocrine and 2 adenocarcinoma), 1 renal cell carcinoma and 1 lung cancer patient…We analyzed the case records for potential effects of the extract on tumor regression/stability in the absence of chemotherapy, survival time, use concurrent with chemotherapy and toxicity. The renal cell patient experienced tumor regression for 12 months with the extract alone; the 3 pancreatic cancer patients and a colon cancer patient experienced disease stabilization. Survival times were extended for all patients with survival times ranging from 32 months to 11 years for these patients with metastatic disease.

Sonodynamic and Photodynamic Therapy Combined

A combination of sonodynamic therapy (SDT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT), named sono-photodynamic therapy (S-PDT), is a new composite cancer therapy. Because the therapy can significantly improve the tumor curing effect, it has good application prospects in cancer prevention and treatment.

This study states: Clinical studies revealed that PDT can be curative particularly in early-stage tumors. It can prolong survival in inoperable cancers and significantly improve quality of life. Minimal normal tissue toxicity, negligible systemic effects, greatly reduced long-term morbidity, lack of intrinsic or acquired resistance mechanisms, and excellent cosmetic as well as organ function-sparing effects of this treatment make it a valuable therapeutic option for combination treatments. With a number of recent technological improvements, PDT has the potential to become integrated into the mainstream of cancer treatment.
