Noni (Morinda citrifolia)

Noni is an evergreen shrub or small tree that grows throughout the tropical regions of the Pacific Ocean, from Southeast Asia to Australia. Noni has a history of use as a topical preparation for joint pain and skin conditions. Today, noni fruit juice has folk uses as a general health tonic and for cancer and chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Studies

Study: The results of this study confirm the cellular and humoral immunostimulant properties of M. citrifolia fruits and justify its usage in traditional medicine.

This Review says: Thus it was later concluded that the Noni juice seems to suppress tumor growth indirectly by stimulating the immune system. Mechanism by which noni can do these function is called ‘adoptogenesis’. Nitric oxide (NO) ,produced by activated macrophages plays a role in the host protection against pathogen as well as malignant tumors. Noni increases the body’s biosynthesis of NO.

Study:These results suggest that noni modulates the immune system via activating of the CB2 receptors, and suppressing of the IL-4, but increasing the production of IFN- cytokines. It may also exert beneficial immunomodulation effects in conditions involving inadequate immune responses.

Study: These data demonstrate that fNE [fermented Noni exudate] appears to be able to stimulate the innate immune system and the adaptive immune system to reject tumor cells. NK cells respond quickly and appear to be among the major players of the innate immune system, while the adaptive immune system reacts later with a retained memory.
