Inositol Hexaphosphate (IP6) and Inositol

IP6 is a molecule present in mammalian cells and obtained from various dietary sources such as grains and legumes, Inositol hexaphosphate (IP6) that is used to prevent and treat cancer and heart disease.

IP6 is found in processed soy, beans, brown rice, corn, sesame seeds, wheat bran and other high-fiber foods.

Studies

This study is a case report of a patient with metastatic melanoma.
We present a case report of a patient with metastatic melanoma who declined traditional therapy and opted to try over the counter supplement IP6+inositol instead. To our surprise, the patient achieved a complete remission and remains in remission 3 years later.

This study states: A striking anticancer effect of IP6 was demonstrated in different experimental models. Inositol is also a natural constituent possessing moderate anticancer activity. The most consistent and best anticancer results were obtained from the combination of IP6 plus inositol. In addition to reducing cell proliferation, IP6 increases differentiation of malignant cells, often resulting in a reversion to normal phenotype
…Enhanced immunity and antioxidant properties can also contribute to tumor cell destruction. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying this anticancer action are not fully understood. Because it is abundantly present in regular diet, efficiently absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, and safe, IP6 holds great promise in our strategies for the prevention and treatment of cancer. IP6 plus inositol enhances the anticancer effect of conventional chemotherapy, controls cancer metastases, and improves the quality of life, as shown in a pilot clinical trial. The data strongly argue for the use of IP6 plus inositol in our strategies for cancer prevention and treatment…
…An enhanced antitumor activity without compromising the patient’s quality of life was demonstrated in a pilot clinical trial involving six patients with advanced colorectal cancer (Dukes C and D) with multiple liver and lung metastasis. IP6 plus inositol was given as an adjuvant to chemotherapy according to Mayo protocol. One patient with liver metastasis refused chemotherapy after the first treatment, and she was treated only with IP6 plus inositol; her control ultrasound and abdominal computed tomography scan 14 mo after surgery showed a significantly reduced growth rate. A reduced tumor growth rate was noticed overall and in some cases a regression of lesions was noted. Additionally, when IP6 plus inositol was given in combination with chemotherapy, side effects of chemotherapy (drop in leukocyte and platelet counts, nausea, vomiting, alopecia) were diminished and patients were able to perform their daily activities

This study concludes: IP6 hydrolysates were able to suppress SW620 colon carcinoma cells and inhibited the activation of the AKT protein. The 20 and 30% DH IP6 hydrolysates suppressed the proliferation and inhibited the AKT protein. IP6 has been known to be an anti-nutrition phytochemical for decades. Our findings in the present study suggest that IP6 and its hydrolysates may be a valuable agent for cancer prevention and treatment, however further investigation is required.

This study states: Patients receiving chemotherapy, along with IP6 + Inositol did not have cytopenia, drop in leukocyte and platelet counts. Red blood cell counts and tumor markers were unaltered in both groups. However, patients who took IP6 + Inositol had significantly better quality of life (p = 0.05) and functional status (p = 0.0003) and were able to perform their daily activities. Conclusion IP6 + Inositol as an adjunctive therapy is valuable help in ameliorating the side effects and preserving quality of life among the patients treated with chemotherapy.

Side Effects

IP6 binds calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc, and copper in the stomach, and may reduce their absorption.

Do not take if:
Your are taking mineral supplements: Phytic acid can bind with calcium, iron, magnesium, and zinc in the stomach and reduce their bioavailability.
Your are taking anticoagulants/antiplatelet agents: IP6 has antiplatelet activity and may increase the risk of bleeding.
